Traps can be found in many of the treasure chests in Valkyrie Profile and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. There are four types of traps, with different means of avoiding them. The Trap Search item in Valkyrie Profile makes trapped chests flash red, but there is no equivalent item in Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. Triggering a trap does not affect the contents of the treasure chest, and there are no means of disarming them.

Explosion trapsEdit

When the chest is opened, an explosion occurs, damaging the character and knocking them back. This can potentially prove dangerous if the chest is situated in a precarious location, such as on a narrow ledge, or above a drop (cf. Celestial Castle). This is the most common type of trap, appearing in most dungeons, and sometimes the only type of trap in a given dungeon.

  • In Valkyrie Profile, the explosion is preceded by a glow coming from the chest. In addition, the explosion may vary in size (small or large).
  • In Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, the explosion is preceded by a spark flying out of the chest.

Explosion traps can be avoided by jumping or backing away from the chest.

Gas trapsEdit

When the chest is opened, a cloud of gas is released, causing a negative status effect to the entire party. This can prove dangerous if there are enemies nearby.

There are four types of gas trap:

  • Freezing gas: A light blue gas which freezes the character in place for a few seconds. This is the most common type of gas trap.
  • Confusion gas: A multicolored gas which confuses the character for a few seconds, inverting the directions on the control pad (pressing left will make you go right).
  • Poison gas: A purple gas which poisons the character. As any type of poison, this should be cured with an item or a spell.
  • Paralyzing gas (Valkyrie Profile only): A black gas which paralyzes the character, making them unable to move for a few seconds. This is essentially the same effect as freezing gas. This is also the rarest type of trap in the game, only found in three chests (one in Dipan and two in the Arianrod Labyrinth).

Gas traps can be avoided by crouching.

Arrow trapsEdit

When the chest is opened, an arrow flies out of it horizontally, damaging the character. The arrow may sometimes be poisoned, in which case it will be purple and will poison the entire party in addition to dealing damage. As with any type of poison, this should be cured with an item or spell.

Arrow traps can be avoided by jumping on the spot or sliding (in Valkyrie Profile).

Enemy trapsEdit

When the chest is opened, enemies appear. This is the least common type of trap.

  • In Valkyrie Profile, there will only be one enemy, spawning directly from the chest. It is thus impossible to avoid, and the enemy will have the first turn in battle.
  • In Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, multiple enemies may appear, but they will spawn at a distance from the character and can therefore be avoided or crystallized.
