A sorcerer of Flenceburg once conducted black magic experiments on plants here. The wizard is long gone and the facilities are in disrepair, but the area is threatened by the experimental plants that were created. It seems evil forces are gathering there.
The Salerno Academy is a dungeon in Valkyrie Profile, situated near Flenceburg, on an island off the Eastern coast of Midgard. The ruins of the laboratory are overrun by various plants, and a Harpy inhabits them. Clearing a path through the ruins requires the judicious use of scents, as well as capsules of acid, all found in the dungeon itself. A small room near the entrance of the building contains a research journal detailing how the plants react to these elements. The dungeon is only available on Hard mode, from Chapter 2 onwards.
Salerno was most likely the abode of Woltar, an alchemist with a sinister reputation. In 746 C.C., he supposedly kidnapped Lylia, the queen of Crell Monferaigne, and took her back to Salerno, where he was rumoured to perform horrifying experiments. In reality, Woltar and Lylia were lovers, and she eloped with him to escape an unwanted marriage. The pair had a daughter, Lydia, but they were eventually located by the royal guard six years later. Woltar was executed, and Lylia and Lydia were taken back to Crell Monferaigne. However, Lylia lost the will to live and eventually threw herself from the castle walls.
